controversy of salad

the controversy on salad

It has been very popular lately for people to eat salad. It is like everyone has all of a sudden became health freaks. But salad is not a healthy substitute, it is a hole filler. To start off, most salads have ice burg lettuce in them, which has no nutritional benefit what so ever. It is because it is mainly water. Yes, water is very beneficial, but when water is coming from food without any other nutrition to it, it is just empty calories and depriving the body of what it needs. On the other hand, some salads are made with spinach. Spinach has benefits, but not something meant to replace a whole meal. In most salads, the most popular mix-in is cucumber, again which is just water. Just because it is green, does not mean it is always the best thing for you. A mix-in that is left out in a lot of cases is protein. No matter what kind of protein is preferred, most salads lack it. Without protein, the body will lack energy and then resulting in a decrease of function, physically and mentally. Then of course, most salads are drenched in dressing. Has anyone ever looked at the nutrition facts on their preferred dressing? Most salad dressing are high in fat and sugar. Yes, there are low-fat dressings options out there, but the more fat that is taken out of something, the more sugar is put in because let's face it, fat is flavor. Sugar is even more harmful then fat, it steals away energy (more info on the harms of sugar in blog).  And no one wants to eat dry salad. So next time the thought of eating a salad to be healthy comes to mind, remember salad is not always a beneficial option if it is a meal replacement. Eat a salad for a appetizer, but make sure to still be getting the needed nutrition.
